Frequently asked questions
When the data has outliers or is skewed, like salaries or home prices.
Mean vs median vs mode
The mean (average) is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted — more resistant to outliers than the mean. The mode is the most frequent value, and the range is the difference between the highest and lowest values.
A single very high or low number pulls the mean but barely affects the median, which is why household income and home prices are often reported as medians.
