Frequently asked questions
Price minus variable cost per unit — the amount each sale adds to cover fixed costs.
How break-even analysis works
Each unit sold contributes price − variable cost towards fixed costs. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution margin per unit. With 10,000 of fixed costs, a price of 50 and a variable cost of 30, you need 500 units.
Every unit above that point is profit. Raising prices, lowering variable costs or cutting fixed costs all move the break-even point lower.
