Frequently asked questions
The browser reads it as the start of a tag, so raw < in content can corrupt the page layout.
Why HTML entities matter
Characters like <, >, & and " have special meaning in HTML — using them raw inside page content can break markup or, worse, let user input be interpreted as code. Encoding them as entities (<, >, &, ") displays the symbol safely without it being parsed as a tag.
This matters whenever you insert user-supplied text into an HTML page: comments, usernames, search results and similar dynamic content should always be entity-encoded first.
