Frequently asked questions
2-3 inches (5-8 cm) is typical for most garden beds.
How much mulch to use
Volume = length × width × depth. A bed 5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 inches deep needs about 0.09 cubic yards of mulch.
A 2-3 inch layer is enough for most beds; too much mulch can suffocate roots and hold excess moisture against stems. Bagged mulch is usually sold in 2 cubic foot bags, so the calculator’s cubic feet figure also helps you count bags.
