How it works
- 1
Enter a, b and c
The coefficients in ax² + bx + c = 0.
- 2
Get the roots
One, two, or complex solutions depending on the discriminant.
- 3
Check the discriminant
It tells you how many real solutions exist.

Frequently asked questions
The equation has two complex roots, shown using the imaginary unit i.
The quadratic formula
The quadratic formula is x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a. The discriminant, b² − 4ac, decides the type of solution: positive gives two real roots, zero gives one repeated real root, and negative gives two complex roots.
For example, x² − 5x + 6 = 0 has a discriminant of 1, giving roots x = 2 and x = 3.
