Frequently asked questions
Roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women fall in the fitness and average ranges used by the American Council on Exercise.
How the US Navy method works
The formula, developed by the US Naval Health Research Center, estimates body density from circumference measurements and height. Measure the neck just below the larynx, the waist at the navel for men or at its narrowest point for women, and the hips at their widest point.
Tape-measure methods are typically within 3–4 percentage points of lab techniques such as DEXA. Measure at the same time of day, relaxed and without clothing over the tape, and track the trend rather than a single number.
